What is the HCG protocol?
In 1954, endocrinologist, Dr. Simeons, discovered that a natural hormone found in the body called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) could accelerate fat mobilization from certain area of the body when combined with a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD). It is proposed that HCG has the effect of “unlocking” the body’s fat stores so that metabolism can safely burn these energy reserves to power daily bodily functions. The special component to weight loss with HCG is that it is a muscle-sparing form of weight loss. HCG acts as a natural appetite suppressant, eliminating the need for pharmaceutical appetite suppressant drugs. While on the HCG hormone and following the designated food protocol, approximately 1500-4000 calories per day is released into the system thus preventing hunger and preventing the body from entering starvation mode. By using this targeted method of safely reducing calories, while maintain muscle and eating a clean healthy diet, there is virtually no metabolic slowdown. Rather, this program results in an increase in metabolism and a correction of damaged metabolism.

Results:
The average weight loss on the longer HCG program (40 days) is 20-25 pounds for women and 25-30 pounds for men. For the shorter HCG program, women can expect a 10-15 pound loss and men, a 20-25 pound loss. Results will vary by individual based on program adherence, gender, body fat ratio, and individual metabolic rate. The average rate of weight loss is half a pound to one pound per day. We have not found any significant difference in rate of loss between the sublingual form versus then injections.
Will I gain the weight back when I am done with the program?
As with any weight loss program, if the maintenance protocol is not followed as directed, weight gain may result. However, if properly followed, most patients enjoy lasting weight loss. During the 6 week maintenance phase, you will work closely with your nutrition and fitness coach to re-establish the body’s new set-point weight and correct the metabolism. The maintenance phase is an essential part of the HCG diet program and should never be skipped.
Are there any side-effects of HCG?
Because HCG is a hormone made by and recognized by the human body, most patients experience no negative effects and report feeling particularly well. The only unpleasant effects typically occur in the first week and are related to the body detoxifying from common inflammatory foods that are being eliminated or from the rapid initial drop in weight. These effects are usually only dull headache or more fatigue. Prior to beginning, you will have a physical exam with one of our physicians to review your medical history and labs to ensure you are a candidate for this program.

What’s the first step?
The first step is scheduling an appointment for a consultation with the nutrition and fitness coach at SaJune. This appointment will explain the program in detail, decide if you are a candidate, answer any questions you may have, and provide you with a manual for the program, should you decide to start. If you decide to begin, the program will be set up for you that day or you may be scheduled to return based on when you decide to begin the diet. At this point you will choose your form of HCG (sublingual pill or injections) and your calorie level (your nutrition and fitness coach will help you decide the appropriate caloric level for you).
*It is MANDATORY that all patients have a brief physical exam in our office, and current labs either from our office or recent labs from another provider outside of SaJune.

Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is a term for an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It does not say anything about which foods you should eat, but rather when you should eat them. In this respect, it is not a “diet” in the conventional sense. It is more accurately described as an “eating pattern.” Common intermittent fasting methods involve daily 16 hour fasts, or fasting for 24 hours, twice per week.
Humans have been fasting throughout evolution. Sometimes it was done because food was not available, and it has also been a part of major religions, including Islam, Christianity and Buddhism. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors didn’t have supermarkets, refrigerators or food available year-round and yet were healthier that Americans are today. They often went for long periods time of time without food while looking for their next food source. In fact, fasting from time to time is more “natural” than constantly eating 3-4 (or more) meals per day.

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
- Human Growth Hormone (HGH) increases by as much as 5-fold

- Cellular repair takes place
- Hormones are released that aid in fat-loss and muscle construction
- Weight loss occurs
- Muscle building occurs more efficiently
